The late Peter Farkas (1944-2022) was a founding partner of HFK and a highly respected intellectual property attorney whose legal expertise, global perspective, and lifelong commitment to his clients helped shape the firm’s foundation and legacy.

Peter and Michael Halloran first met while practicing law in Washington, D.C. Their friendship spanned more than four decades, during which they often discussed their shared aspiration of creating a law firm together. In 2017, that vision became a reality when they joined with Ted Kittila to establish Halloran Farkas & Kittila LLP.

Following Peter’s passing in 2022, the partners made the decision to retain his name in the firm as a lasting tribute to his contributions. Throughout his career, Peter provided invaluable counsel in intellectual property, patent, antitrust, and complex litigation matters, earning the trust and respect of clients and colleagues alike.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, in the final months of World War II, Peter experienced an international upbringing that profoundly influenced his outlook on life and law. His family relocated several times during his childhood, living in Prague, Paris, and Munich. As a result, Peter became fluent in German, English, Hungarian, and French. After attending the Munich American School, he immigrated to the United States and attended Syracuse University before earning his law degree from Suffolk University Law School and a Juris Doctor in International Law from Georgetown University.

In 1968, Peter moved to Washington, D.C., where he began his legal career in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. He later entered private practice, focusing on patent, intellectual property, and antitrust litigation. A highlight of his distinguished career came in 1990 when he successfully argued a case before the United States Supreme Court on behalf of the Air Courier Conference of America in its dispute with the United States Postal Service.

Beyond his legal accomplishments, Peter was an accomplished photographer whose creativity and curiosity reflected the same attention to detail and appreciation for perspective that defined his legal career.

Today, Peter’s legacy continues through the firm he helped build and the enduring impact he had on clients, colleagues, and friends.
